Friars Take 13th-Ranked Rutgers To Overtime Before Falling, 81-76

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team came 50 seconds from upsetting the 13th-ranked Rutgers University Scarlet Knights before falling, 81-76, in overtime.

The Friars (6-6 overall/0-3 BIG EAST) used a spirited first half to lead, 38-34, after the first 20 minutes of play. PC junior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) eight points in the first half, hitting three-of-four shots from the floor and connecting on two-of-two three-point attempts. Senior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) added nine first-half points and was a perfect four-for-four from the floor and one-of-one from behind the arc.

Vozab and Robert's combined for 17 points to offset Rutgers' senior guard Tasha Pointer, who had 12 points, six rebounds and six assists while playing all 20 first-half minutes. Rutgers out-muscled PC on the boards in the first half, holding a 28-15 advantage, but the Friars held the lead because they took care of the ball - committing only four turnovers in the first half.

The two teams went back and forth in the second half with six ties, four lead changes and the Friars holding the largest lead at 10:45 when PC freshman Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) hit a fast-break driving layup.

The Friars held a five-point leads when Quinn sunk two free throws and extended PC's lead with 50 seconds remaining. After a Rutgers timeout, the Knights' Kourtney Walton hit a layin on a third-chance basket to cut the Providence lead to three points. Vozab was fouled with 29 seconds remaining and went to the foul line, but missed both shots. Walton hit a contested three-pointer at the other end with 16 seconds remaining and tied the contest at 68-68. PC's Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) missed a jumper in the paint with three seconds remaining and the teams went to overtime.

In the overtime period, PC went up two on a put-back jumper by Wilcox. Rutgers answered with a jumper from Davalyn Cunningham. The Friars went back up by two when senior Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) hit two free throws with 1:57 remaining. Rutgers went up a point 19 seconds later when Karlita Washington drilled a three in the corner. PC got three more point the final 88 seconds, from Quinn and Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) on free throws, while the Scarlet Knights (9-4 overall/2-1 BIG EAST) scored eight points for the final five-point margin.

The Friars were led by Vozab's season-high 18 points. Wilcox scored 15 points in the loss, while Quinn added 14 points and six assists and Roberts scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Scarlet Knights were led by Tasha Pointer, who recorded a triple double with 18 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds. Kourtney Walton added 19 points and Linda Miles chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, January 13th, travel to the University of Connecticut to face the nation's top ranked team.
