Women's Basketball Falls To No. 16/23 DePaul, 71-38

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 16/23 DePaul, 71-38, in BIG EAST Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday, January 5 in Chicago, Ill. Providence falls to 7-7 on the season and 0-2 in the BIG EAST, while DePaul improves to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in league action.

The Blue Demons raced out to a 23-4 lead midway through the first half, as Providence hit just one of its first 13 shots on the offensive end. At the break, DePaul held a 40-18 advantage on a blistering 64.3-percent shooting from the field (18-28), while Providence managed to convert just 6-of-25 field-goal attempts for 24.0-percent.

DePaul took a 40-18 lead into the locker room at halftime behind a well-balanced attack. Eight players scored for DePaul in the opening 20 minutes, led by Sam Quigley's nine points. Keisha Hampton and Felicia Chester each netted seven in the half. The Friars got five points apiece from junior Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) and senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.).

DePaul cooled off from the field in the second half, but still outscored the Friars 31-20 to take the decisive win.

Wells finished the game with a team-high nine points for Providence. Sophomore Brianna Edwards (Minneapolis, Minn.) netted eight points.

Katherine Harry scored a team-high 13 points for DePaul. Quigley and Hampton finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, January 8 against BIG EAST foe USF at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
