Women's Hoops Falls At Villanova, 67-39

VILLANOVA, PA. - The Providence College women’s basketball team fell to Villanova, 67-39, in BIG EAST Conference action on Jan. 3 at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. The Friars struggled from the field, shooting just 30-percent (17-57), while Villanova benefited from 41-percent shooting (24-58), including a 15-31 performance from beyond the three-point arc.

Providence started the game with a 4-0 scoring advantage, but Villanova answered with a 13-2 scoring run to close out the first quarter. The Friars cut the deficit to four (16-12) with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter but Villanova outscored PC, 13-5, heading into the break for a 29-17 lead.

Villanova opened the third quarter with a 10-2 scoring edge, and got out to a 20-point lead (36-19) with 3:47 on the clock. Providence was unable to catch fire on the offensive end, hitting just two field goals down the stretch, while Villanova took a 46-24 lead into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

The Friars improved from the field in the fourth quarter, having shot 6-11 from the floor, but the deficit was too large to overcome. The Wildcats out-scored Providence 21-15 in the final 10 minutes of play en route to a 67-39 victory.

Heading into the game, Providence ranked second in the BIG EAST in three-point field-goal percentage defense, but were exposed by the Wildcats behind the arc on Sunday. The Wildcats’ 15 three pointers are the most given up by the Friars this season. Prior to the match-up against Villanova, the Friars surrendered a season-high seven three pointers against Monmouth on Nov. 28).

Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) led the Friars in scoring for the second-straight game with eight points. Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) checked in with seven points and a team-best eight rebounds. Freshmen Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Erica Meyer (Wilton, Conn.) each recorded six points for Providence. Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) dished a team-high three assists, matching her career high.



Megan Quinn led the Wildcats with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She hit 6-12 field-goal attempts, including 3-5 from three-point land. Alex Louin added 13 points, while Katherine Coyer contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Friars return to action with back-to-back home games vs. Butler on Jan. 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Xavier on Jan. 10 at 1:00 p.m. Each game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
