    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Butler, 68-65, in its BIG EAST home opener on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars' second half run, led by junior guard Karin Robinson (Jamaica, N.Y.) was not enough to overcome the Bulldogs' lead. Robinson finished as the game's leading scorer with a career-high 23 points. She finished 8-for-17 from the floor and 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

    Butler gained control of the lead in the fourth minute of play and held its largest lead of the half, nine points with 9:02 left to play. With 3:17 remaining on the game clock, the Friars trailed the Bulldogs, 28-21. Providence closed the half on an 8-2 run to pull within three of Butler at the break, 31-29. After sinking only four of their first 22 shots, the Friars closed the half hitting 8-of-12 shots from the field. Robinson led the Friars offense with 10 points.

    The Bulldogs extended their lead to 16 points with 5:54 left in regulation. The Friars went on a 15-0 run led by Robinson, who hit two 3-pointers to bring the Friars within one point of the Bulldogs with 30 seconds left to play (66-65). Taylor Schippers downed two free throws to secure the Butler victory.

    Four Bulldogs finished the game in double figures. Daress McClung recorded a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds.

    Providence junior forward Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) and sophomore forward Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) joined Robinson in double figures with 14 points and 10 points, respectively. In addition, Harris hauled in nine rebounds. Freshman guard Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) finished the game with 5 points and dished out a career-high eight assists.



    Providence returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 when the Friars travel to Villanova, Pa. for an afternoon match-up with Villanova. Tip off at The Pavilion is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
