PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams are competing at the NCAA Regional Championship held in Madison, Conn. on Friday, Nov. 9. The race will be hosted by Yale University.
The No. 28 Friar women have had a full two weeks to prepare for the 6K course that is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. The team placed fifth of 36 teams last year.
The Friars will be led by freshman Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland). Collins has been the Friar’s top-finisher in the past three races she has competed in, including a second place finish at the BIG EAST Championship on Oct. 26. Collins received All-BIG EAST honors for her top-15 finish. Senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) also received All-BIG EAST honors, finishing fifth and 11th, respectively. They will be joining Collins at Regionals. At last year’s event, Greany and Nagel were among the team’s top-five finishers. Nagel finished sixth, which was second on the team, and Greany finished 25th, which was fifth on the team.
Juniors Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia), and senior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) also will be among the team travelling to the championships. At the BIG EAST Championship, Roecker placed in the Friar’s top-five, finishing 24th and 4th on the team. Last year at the regional championship, Sisson was the top-finisher for the women’s team, placing fourth overall. Thek finished 32nd.
The Friars also will be bringing freshmen Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) to round out their squad. These newcomers both made their first appearances at New Hampshire, and placed in the top-10 overall. They also competed at the conference championship and earned their spots for the trip to Madison. Keating finished fifth for the team and 38th overall. Sischo finished 54th.
The men’s 10K is scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m.
Last year, the Friars finished fourth out of 33 teams and earned a bid to the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) finished 17th behind former Friars Dominic Channon and David McCarthy. At BIG EAST’s, Quinn was again the top-finisher for the Friars with a second place finish.
The experienced runners joining Quinn are seniors Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) and Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand). At last year’s event, Ali placed in the team’s top-five, finishing 39th. Wallace finished 109th. However, at this year’s conference championship, Walace finished 12th, which was second on the team.
Junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales), sophomores Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) and Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.), and freshmen Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) round out the squad headed to Regionals. At the conference championsip, Hopkins finished third for the men’s team and 27th overall. Dixon and Costello also were on the team that raced at the BIG EAST Championship. Dixon finished 30th (fourth on the team) and Costello finished 46th.
