PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released national rankings today for the eighth week of the 2011 cross country season, with both Friar cross country teams represented. The women's team moved up two spots and is now ranked fifth with 315 points. The men's team is now ranked 30th with 36 points.
Both teams ran at the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, October 29, in Louisville, Ky. The women's team placed second at the meet, only nine points behind first place Villanova. Sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) was the top Friar, finishing in fourth place with a time of 19:57.40. Sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) earned a sixth place finish with a time of 20:12.60, and senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned ninth place with a time of 20:19.00. Senior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) crossed the finish line in 19th with a time of 20:43.50, followed by junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) in 25th to round out the Friar scoring, crossing the line in 20:58.20.
The men's team placed fifth at the BIG EAST Championships. Senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) took second place with a time of 23:29.30. Next in for the Friars was senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) who finished in 17th place with a time of 24:06.40. Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) finished in 28th place with a time of 24:20.90. Freshman Benjamin Connor (Derby, England; 24:29.10) and senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand; 24:32.40) rounded out the scoring by finishing 34th and 35th, respectively.
The Friars will return to action on November 12 at the NCAA Regionals in Buffalo, N.Y.
