Providence Cross Country Races At CCSU Mini Meet

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the CCSU Mini Meet on Friday, Oct. 20. At CSSU, the men compete in a 5,000-meter race while the women compete in a 3,000-meter race. The Friars annually use the Mini Meet as a way of finalizing the roster for the BIG EAST Championships.

Junior Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) led the men’s efforts on the day by finishing in 11th place with a time of 15:24. Freshman Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and sophomore Peter Rindfuss (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished within a second of each other as they raced to times of 15:30 and 15:31. The two were the second and third runners on the day and were the 17th and 18th finshers. Rounding out the scoring for Providence was junior Salvatore Flight (Riverside, Ill.) in 22nd place (15:35) and freshman Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) in 37th place (15:48.8). Freshman Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) was the final Friar finisher in the varsity race, taking 65th with a time of 16:23. As a team, the men finished in third place with 105 points. UMASS Amherst won the meet with 62 points and host CCSU finished second with 96 points.

Sophomore Alexandra DeCicco (Holtsville, N.Y.) was the fastest woman on the day for the women. DeCicco raced to a time of 10:33 and claimed ninth overall. Junior Dara Cuffe (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.) was the second runner for Providence as she finished 30th in a time of 10:52. Freshman Abigail Post (Wantage, N.J.), junior Aisling Quinn (Waterford, Ireland)  and sophomore Rylee Gillen (Bolton, Mass.) were the final three scorers for Providence taking 41st (10:57), 49th (11:01) and 105th(11:48), respectively. Sophomore Bridget Gonzalez (Baltimore, Md.) was the final finisher for Providence as she took 122nd(12:21). The women finished in ninth place as team. The University of New Hampshire won the Mini Meet.

The men had two finishers in the Sub-Varsity race. Sophomore McGrath Bissaillon (Merrimack, Mass.) finished 20th (16:30) while freshman Thomas Arbeiter (Ellington, Conn.) finished 22nd (16:32).

The Friars now enter the championship portion of their schedule. They will race next in Kenosha, Wis. at the Parkside Cross Country Course for the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28. The men and women making up the teams that will compete at the Championships will be announced at a later date.
