MADISON, WIS. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams both competed at the eighth annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13. The women raced their way to a fifth place team finish. The men finished in 35th place as a team.

Women’s Recap:
The women entered the meet as the eighth ranked team in the country and the fifth ranked team in the race. With such a deep field, it was essential for the Lady Friars to get out well and position themselves within the lead group. Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.), graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) would do so as early on the lead group was all in the top 50 of the race.

The race was broken wide open when Ednah Kurgat of New Mexico surged around the halfway point. What was a group of about 15 women became a string of small groups fighting for position over the final 2,000 meters. The Friars ran a strong final portion of the race as the team moved up from ninth place as a team to fifth. Paladino would end up being the top finisher for the women as she took 17th place with a time of 20:13.6. Ilarda and Rocha were not far behind as they finished 21st (20:15.0) and 34th (20:27.2), respectively. Wheeler and freshman Maria Coffin would round out the scoring for Providence as they finished 67th (20:56.3) and 114th (21:25.6).

All told, the Friars would score 253 points to finish fifth as a team. The New Mexico would claim the team title (87 points), followed by San Francisco (126 points), NC State (169 points), and Boise State (233).

Men’s Recap:
The men’s race remained tightly bunched together for nearly the entire race. The pace would slowly pick up throughout but it was not until the final 2,000 meters did the lead pack finally begin to separate. Senior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) led the Friars on the day. Hanlon would tie his best finish ever at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational as he finished 114th (24:54.0). Juniors Michael O’Leary (St. James, N.Y.) and Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) would finish within a second of each other as they took 168th (25:12.2)  and 169th (25:12.5), respectively.

Next Up:
The Friars will travel to Stanley Park in New Britain, Conn. for the annual CCSU Mini Meet on Friday, Oct. 20. Providence annually sends a “B” to the Mini Meet in order to solidify the BIG EAST Championship team. The men will race a 5k while the women will compete in a 3k.
