PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) was selected as BIG EAST Conference Athlete of the Week for Cross Country, based on his outstanding performance at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3 at Notre Dame, Ind. Leading the way for the Friars, McCarthy placed 12th, completing the eight-kilometer course in a time of 23:58. The race featured 19 of the 30 teams ranked nationally by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Providence College Friars placed fourth in the team standings, and are currently ranked 22nd in the nation. Each week, the BIG EAST Conference will select a male and female BIG EAST Athlete of the Week in cross country. The Providence men's and women's cross country teams return to action this weekend, Saturday October 11, 2008 when they compete at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, MA.
