NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Providence College women's cross country team enters the 2013 season ranked first in the nation, it was announced today, Tuesday, Aug. 27 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in the preseason coaches' poll.
The national poll ranked the women first in the nation with 359 points (11 out of 12 first place votes). The last time the women were ranked first in the country was in 1996, the year after taking the 1995 national title. The regional poll, released on Aug. 26 by the USTFCCCA, ranked the women first in the northeast. The women return seniors Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), and sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), all of whom earned All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
On the men's side, the team will enter the season ranked fifth in the northeast. The men also received 17 votes in the national preseason coaches' poll. Junior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) returns for the men, looking to build on the 2012 season that saw him take second at the 2012 BIG EAST Championships, third at the 2012 NCAA Northeast Regional, and tied for 69th at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
