Tyler McCabe And Paul Reilly Earn Academic All-District 1 Second Team Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Thursday, May 23 that junior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn) and senior Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) earned 2002 Track & Field/Cross Country Verizon Academic All-District 1 Second Team honors. As part of an overall expansion of the Verizon Academic All-America program, the track & field/cross country teams were selected for the first time in the history of the program. In the past, track & field/cross country athletes were selected as part of the At-Large Teams.

McCabe, a computer science major with a 3.72 GPA, was Providence's fifth finisher at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championship. He helped the Friars finish 10th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. In 1998 and 2000, he was a member of the Friar cross country team which finished first at the BIG EAST Championship. This spring, McCabe won the 5,000 meters at the UConn Invitational. He is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.

Reilly, a management major with a 3.49 GPA, earned Verizon All-District 1 honors last year. In his most recent race, Reilly placed fourth in the 5,000 at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, Reilly earned Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors in 1999. Last year, he won the 3,000 meters at the IC4A Indoor Championship and finished second in the 5,000 at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. In April, he received the Joseph V. MacAndrew Award, which is presented annually to the Providence male senior varsity athlete who has achieved an outstanding level of performance in academics and athletics during his undergraduate career at PC.
