PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) of the Providence College softball team and senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) of the Providence College cross country and track teams were both awarded 2011-12 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The scholarship is a $2,000 grant towards graduate studies.
Abrams is the second Providence College softball player to receive this scholarship. In 2011, Abrams was inducted to Chi Alpha Sigma and earned 2011 Capital One Academic All-District honors. Abrams has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and has qualified for the Dean's List each of the last three seasons. Abrams also has been a recipient of the Providence College Softball Academic Award, which requires students to maintain a 3.5 GPA. Last season, Abrams led the Friars with 61 hits, 35 runs scored and 100 total bases. In five games this season, Abrams has a .375 batting average, second best on the team.
Matthews has been a three-year member of the Friar cross country and track programs. Last season, he earned Second Team All-America honors in both indoor and outdoor track. The accomplishments highlighted a remarkable campaign that saw him earn a spot in three NCAA Championships, advancing in cross country, indoor and outdoor. Already this school-year, he helped the Friar cross country team qualify for the national championships for the 16th time in the last 17 attempts. Providence placed 22nd in the nation.
