Men's Cross Country Opens Season with Win at UNH
DURHAM, N.H - Juniors Ben Noad and Zack Ventress finished first and second respectively in leading the Providence College men's cross country to a season opening victory over the University of New Hampshire and Northeastern Friday afternoon in Durham, New Hampshire. The Friars finished first with 24 points followed by UNH with 33 and Northeastern with 81.
Noad, a native of Bristol, England, ran the course in a time of 25:00 to lead all runners while winning his first cross country race at Providence College. He was followed 13 seconds later by Ventress (Spokane, Wash.) in a time of 25:13. UNH placed the next three runners as Kevin Horgan (25:27), Jeremy Howard (25:32) and Brett Rickenbach (25:25) kept the Wildcats close.
PC's next three runners finished sixth through eighth respectively. John O'Mara (So., Northboro, Mass.) checked in with a time of 25:28. Rick Bush (Jr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) was seventh in 25:46 and Carl Mauro (Jr., Hornell, N.Y.) was eighth with a time of 25:48. Northeastern's Dan Thomsen was ninth in 25:51 and UNH's Carl Schneck rounded out the top ten with a time of 26:05.
Rounding out the Providence contingent of runners was Larry Morrissey (So., Waterford, Ireland) who finished 13th in 26:39 and John Mashia (Sr., Middletown, Conn.) who was 17th in a time of 27:31.
The Friars men's junior varsity team will compete Saturday morning in the Central Connecticut Invitational in New Britian, Connecticut. PC's fourth-ranked women's team will open its season on Saturday in the women's Central Connecticut Invitational.
