NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -
The Providence College men's cross country team turned in a first place finish at the Central Connecticut State University Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn. today (Oct. 25.) The men's 5k race took place at the Stanley Quarter Park.
The Friars were led by sophomore Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), who turned in a season-best third place finish with a time of 15:08. Classmates Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.) and Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) joined Oakley in the top-10 finishers with seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively. Vercollone crossed the finish line at 15:16 just one second before Robertson (15:17).
Sophomore Brendan Sullivan (Foxboro, Mass.) and freshman Hugh Armstrong (Balina, County Mayo, Ireland) were the final Friars to score for Providence. Sullivan placed 23rd with a time of 15:34, while Armstrong ran the race in a time of 15:35 for a 24th place finish.
Freshmen Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Billy Bragg (Middletown, N.J.) were the finial Friars to finish the race. Feinstein finished on the heels of Armstrong with a time of 15:36 and a 25th place finish. Bragg ran the 5k race in a time of 15:50 for a 36th place finish.
The Friars were first out of 13 teams with 65 points. Host Central Connecticut came in second with 86 points, while Yale took third with 106 points. Providence will use today's results to determine the final squad that will compete at the BIG EAST Championships in Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
