BOSTON, Mass. -- The seven-ranked Providence College men's cross country team and the seventh-ranked Providence women's cross country team each won the New England Championship on Friday, October 12, 2001 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.

For the Friar men it was the 21st time the team won the New England title and it was the PC women's 10th New England crown. It also marked the fifth time the Friar men and women each won the New England titles in the same year (1988, 1990, 1996, 1998, 2001).

In addition to the team titles, PC also swept the individual championships as junior Roisin McGettigan of Wicklow, Ireland won the women's race (17:29) and senior Hamish Thorpe of Auckland, New Zealand captured the men's race (24:24). It was the first time two PC runners swept the individual title since 1998 when Ben Noad and Sarah Dupre each won the men's and women's title.

Led by McGettigan, the Friar women's squad scored 46 points to defeat 34 other schools. Also scoring for the Friars were senior Kathryn Casserly of Galway, Ireland (fourth - 17:49), junior Emer O'Shea of Limerick, Ireland (seventh - 17:58), senior Claire Shearman of Portsmouth, N.H. (eighth - 18:06) and freshman Roisin Quinn of Waterford, Ireland (26th - 18:46).

On the men's side, Thorpe finished first and helped the Friars score 17 points to defeat 41 schools. Providence captured five of the top six spots. PC's other scorers were junior Adam Sutton of Preston England (second - 24:24), senior Dermot Galvin of Kilrush, Ireland (third - 24:40), freshman Patrick Moulton of Pelham, N.H. (fifth - 24:47) and freshman Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ontario (sixth - 24:52).
