The Providence College men's cross country team competed at the New England Championships on October 6 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The Friars placed 15th overall out of 43 schools with 470 points. Cross-city rival Brown University finished first with 95 points.

Leading the way for Providence was senior Doug Coffed (Norcross, Ga.) who finished 24th with a time of 25:51. With the 24th-place finish Coffed earned All-New England honors.

Also running for the Friars was senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.) who placed 63rd (26:26), freshman Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) who finished 92nd (26:43), senior Michael Blanchard (Gatesferry, Conn.) who finished 146th (27:33), junior Ben Saviet (Sutton, Mass.) who placed 152nd (27:40), and freshman Nick Barao (Riverside, R.I.) who finished 163rd (27:53). Boston College's Patrick Mellea finished first with a time of 24:45.

The Friar cross country team competes next at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haunt, Ind. on Saturday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m.
