Men's and Women's Cross Country Win Openers at UNH
Sept. 1, 2000 DURHAM, N.H. -- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams each won their season opener at the University of New Hampshire on Friday, September 1 in Durham, N.H. The PC men's team (15 points) defeated the UNH Wildcats (50 points) by capturing the first five spots. The Friars were paced by two-time All-American Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland), who won the race in a time of 24:25. Also scoring for the Friars were sophomore Chris Livesey of Preston, England (second - 24:58), junior Hamish Thorpe of Auckland, New Zealand (third - 25:05), senior Ciaran Lynch of Limerick, Ireland (fourth - 25:08) and junior Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Ireland (fifth - 25:19). The Friar women's team (19 points) defeated UNH (60 points) and Maine (67 points) by capturing five of the top six positions. Senior Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.), a 1998 cross country All-America selection, won the race in a time of 18:28. She was followed by teammates sophomore Roisin McGettigan of Wicklow, Ireland (third - 18:41), freshman Lisa Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. (fourth - 18:43), senior Francine Darroch of Cambridge, Ontario (fifth - 18:55) and sophomore Emily Tallen of Kingston, Ontario (fifth - 19:05). The PC women's cross country team will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the University of Rhode Island Invitational at 10:00 a.m. The men's team will race again on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Dartmouth Invitational at Hanover, N.H. at 11:00 a.m.
