PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence's Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand), who competes collegiately for the Friars' cross country and track programs, finished fifth in the 1,500 meter run at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. The final was held at the Main Stadium Thammasat University on Sunday, August 12.

Smith, who was competing for New Zealand, completed the 1,500 meter final in fifth place with a time of 3:42.10. Samir Khadar (Algeria) captured the 1,500 meter title with a time of 3:39.62.

Former Friar Deirdre Byrne `05 placed eighth in the women's 1,500 meter final with a time of 4:16.58. Byrne represented her native country of Ireland at the World University Games. Olesya Chumakova (Russia) claimed the title with a time of 4:09.32.
