PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College cross country and track student-athlete Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) is currently competing for his native country of New Zealand at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. On August 9th, Smith finished fourth in his heat in the preliminaries of the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:43.68. With his fourth-place finish, he advances to the final of the 1,500 meters, which is scheduled to be held on Sunday, August 12 in Bangkok. Fabiano Pecanha of Brazil won the 1,500 meter heat with a time of 3:42.80.

Former Friar Deirdre Byrne `05 advanced to the 1,500 meter final after finishing fourth in her heat at the World University Games. Byrne is competing for her native country of Ireland. She completed the preliminary 1,500 meter heat with a time of 4:15.61. The women's 1,500 meter final is scheduled to be run on Sunday, August 15.
