BRASSCHAAT, BELGIUM - Providence College senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) set a school record in the mile (outdoor) while competing in Brasschaat, Belgium. Smith is attempting to qualify for the World Championships and compete for New Zealand, which is his native country. Smith finished second overall in the mile with a time of 3:56.46. His time in the mile also marks a personal record. The previous school record at Providence College in the mile (outdoor) was set by Mark Carroll in July of 1995 (3:58.50).

The World Championships are scheduled to begin on August 25 in Osa'ka, Japan. Smith also will look to qualify for the World Championships for Team New Zealand in the 1,500 meters. Smith is a two-time BIG EAST Individual Champion in the 1,500 meters, and also earned All-America honors after finishing 6th in the 1,500 meters at the 2007 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
