Providence's David McCarthy Wins Bronze In 5,000 Meters At European U23 Athletics Championships

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College cross country and track athlete David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) competed at the European U23 Athletics Championships on Thursday, July 16 in Kaunas, Lithuania for his home country, Ireland. McCarthy placed third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:00.78.

    The pace was extremely slow and tactical early on, the pack of runners passing through 3,000 meters in 8:39.22. The tempo continuously picked up and Spain's Elbendir surged away with two laps remaining. Elbendir went on to win the race in a time of 13:55.10, and McCarthy placed a close third to France's Noureddine Smaïl. This race concludes McCarthy's long track season and he will prepare for the fall NCAA cross country season with the Friars.
