Providence's David McCarthy Places 12th in 1,500 Meter Final At NCAA Outdoor Track And Field Championships

FAYETTVILLE, Ark. - Sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) completed his first season of outdoor track on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the University of Arkansas. McCarthy placed 12th in the final of the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:44.55.

The race was won by Oklahoma State freshman phenom German Fernandez, who led from start to finish, claiming the victory in a time of 3:39.00. McCarthy was with the pack of runners until the final strech, where he faded to 12th place (3:44.55).

McCarthy finishes the year with two All America accolades in Cross Country and Indoor Track (mile). McCarthy won the 3,000 meters title during the indoor season at the BIG EAST Championships. McCarthy won the East Regional 1,500 meter title on May 31, qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The highlight of McCarthy's season came at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on February 14, where he ran 3:57.75 in the mile, the third-fastest time in Providence College history.
