PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Friar men's and women's track teams will compete at the 2003 NCAA East Regional Championships on May 30-31 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The top five athletes in each individual event and the top three relay teams will automatically advance to the NCAA championship meet to be held at California State University in Sacramento, Calif., from June 11-14.

On May 30, senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) will open the competition for the Friars in the javelin at 10:00 a.m. Freeburg, who captured her second BIG EAST javelin title this spring with a throw of 45.77 meters, had a season best throw of 48.51 meters at the Penn Relays on April 24. In 2001, she earned All-America accolades in the javelin and last year she placed 19th at the NCAA Championship.

Three Friars qualified in the 1,500 meters. Freshman Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) and senior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) will run in the women's preliminaries at 2:30 p.m. and sophomore Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) will compete in the men's preliminaries at 2:45 p.m. Crombie qualified for the NCAA Regionals by finishing sixth in the 1,500 at the ECAC Championship (May 18) in a time of 4:29.38. O'Shea ran her best time of the spring in the 1,500 at the Brown Invitational on April 12 where she placed third in a time of 4:28.30. Reale qualified for the Regionals by running the 1,500 in a time of 3:46.77 at the Princeton Invitational on May 10.

Freshman Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand) will run the 800 meter preliminaries at 5:00 p.m. Jones earned his qualifying time by placing second in the 800 at the Princeton Invitational on May 10 in a time of 1:50.45.

The Friars will be most heavily represented in the 5,000 meter races on May 30. Sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) will be the Friars' lone female runner in the 5,000 meter race, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Cullen has registered three impressive second-place finishes in the 5,000 this spring. She placed second (16:23.32) at the Raleigh Relays on March 28, second (16:09.49) at the Penn Relays on April 24 and second (16:05.83) at the BIG EAST Championship on May 3. Cullen earned her first All-America honor in the fall when she finished 28th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The men's 5,000 is scheduled to begin at 6:50 p.m. Senior All-American Adam Sutton (Preston, England), who did not compete at the BIG EAST Championship, is the Friars' top runner. He has qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship by placing third at the Raleigh Relays (14:10.29) on March 28. Sutton captured his second All-America honor in cross country during the fall as he placed 27th at the NCAA Championship. Graduate student Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) also has qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 5,000 meters. Reilly finished 11th in a time of 14:08.92 at the Penn Relays on April 24. Senior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) and sophomore Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) will round out the competitors in the 5,000. McCabe and Moulton both qualified at the Penn Relays. McCabe finished 19th (14:17.58) and Moulton placed 25th (14:21.00).

On Saturday, May 31, the women's final of the 1,500 meters (4:15 p.m.) and the men's final of the 1,500 (4:20 p.m.) will be run. The men's 800 meter final will be run at 5:15 p.m.

The Friars will conclude their East Regional competition in the men's and women's steeplechase. Senior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), the only woman to ever win the BIG EAST 3,000 meter steeplechase, won her third consecutive title this spring in a time of 9:58.26. Her time of 9:58.26 is fastest time ever run by an Irish woman in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and one of the fastest times run by a collegiate runner this season. For her efforts, she was named 2003 BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer. Last year, McGettigan earned All-America honors in the steeplechase at the NCAA Championship as she placed eighth in a time of 10:08.24. McGettigan has captured three All-America honors in her career. Sophomore Pat Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) will compete in the steeplechase on the men's side. His race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. He placed second in the steeplechase on April 12 at the Brown Invitational in a time of 9:07.85 and qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship.
