Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Prepare For First Round of the NCAA Championships

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will compete at the NCAA Championships East Preliminary Round held at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. on May 27-29. Providence is sending the most athletes in program history to the Championship. A total of nine athletes have qualified, including five women and four men. The top 48 men and women in the country will compete in the preliminary rounds, divided between East and West Regions, in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championship final round at the University of Oregon in Eugene,Ore. on June 9-12, 2010.

     For the women's track team, graduate student Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) will compete in the 10,000 meters. DiCamillo is ranked sixth out of the 48 competing athletes, with a season-best time of 33:57.10. Freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) is ranked fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 10:08.66. The steeple will have one round this weekend of three heats. The top three from each heat and the next three fastest times will qualify for Eugene, Ore.

    Providence has two athletes qualified in the 5,000 meters. Junior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) is ranked 40th with a season best of 16:40.07 and freshman Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) is ranked 44th with a season best of 16:43.78. The top-five finishers and the next two fastest times will qualify for the 5,000 meters final in Eugene, Oregon. Sophomore Charlotte Ffrench-O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) qualified for the championships in the 1,500 meters. She is ranked 46th with a season-best of 4:27.58. The 1,500 meters will have two rounds in Greensboro with the first round having four heats. The top-five finisher from each heat and the next four fastest times will qualify for the second round in Greensboro. The quarterfinals will have two heats with the top-five from each heat and the next two fastest times qualifying for the NCAA Championship.


     

     

    The men's track sqaud will have three athletes competing in the 1,500 meters. Sophomore Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) is ranked seventh with a season-best of 3:42.25. Senior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) and sophomore Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) are tied at 14th with a season-best times of 3:43.95. The qualifying procedure will be the same as the women for the 1,500 meters. Senior Tom Webb (Williston, Vt.) qualified in the 10,000 meters and is ranked 47th with a season-best of 30:09.46. There will be one section of the 10,000 in Greensboro and the top-12 will qualify for the final in Eugene, Ore. on June 9-12.
