VILLANOVA, PA. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on Friday, May 12. At the end of the first day, the men’s team has a total of 23 points and the women have 17 points.
Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) highlighted the first day of competition for the Friars by winning her signature event, the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Ilarda wasted no time, as she took the lead right from the start and had a sizable lead after only a lap. The junior ran alone the entire way, as she defended her title by running a personal best time of 9:56.33. Ilarda’s time broke the previous meet record, held by former Friar great Roisin McGettigan ‘03, by nearly a full two seconds. Senior Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished sixth in the race with a time of 10:41.96.
Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.) led the Friar men on day one by winning the 10,000 meters. After two miles, Robertson broke away from the rest of the field to win the event with a time of 30:08.04. The Friars also had solid finishes by Thomas O’Neil (Middletown, N.J.), Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.), and Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland). O’Neil finished third (30:12.57), Scola finished fifth (30:16.03) and Hanlon took sixth (30:18.03).
Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) both raced in the 10,000 meters for the women. Lembo took sixth place in a time of 35:31.22 while Barry finished eighth with a time of 36:48.67.
Earlier in the meet were the trials for the men’s and women’s 1,500 meters and the 800 meters.
Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) finished second in heat one of the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:28.27. By finishing second in her heat, Paladino automatically qualifies for the finals, which will be held at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 13.
Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) and Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) all raced in heat one of the men’s 1,500 meters. Carleo, Oakley and Karamanolis all stayed in the pack before finishing hard to finish second (3:49.95), third (3:50.03), and sixth (3:51.40), respectively. Carleo and Oakley automatically qualified for the finals by finishing in the top four in their heat. Karamanolis’ qualified for the final based on time. The final will be held after the women’s final, at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 13.
James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine) raced in the first heat of the men’s 800 meters. Campbell finished third in his heat with a time of 1:54.36 to qualify to the finals based on time. The finals of the men’s 800 meters are set to start after the women’s final at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 13.
The second day of the BIG EAST Championships will begin on Saturday, May 13 with the 4x100 meter relays at 1:00 p.m.
