Men's and Women's Track Competes at the BIG EAST Championship - May 8
May 8, 2005 PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Providence College men's and women's outdoor track teams competed at the BIG EAST Championship on May 7-8 at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. The men's team finished ninth of 10 teams after scoring 39 points and the women's squad placed 11th of 12 teams after scoring 34 points. The women's team was led by senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) who won the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:12.94 and qualified for the NCAA Regionals. Cullen became the fourth Friar to win the BIG EAST outdoor 5,000 title and the first since Marie McMahon won in 1998. In the 1,500 meters, senior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) finished fifth in a time of 4:30.36. On the men's side, Junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) finished second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:16.17. In the 800 meters, senior Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) finished third in a time of 1:52.80. Freshman Max Smith (Dunedin, Ireland) placed third in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:57.05. The Friars' 4 x 800 meter team of junior Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand), freshman Matt Licari (Amityville, Mass.), Smith and Reale placed third in a time of 7:37.71.
