PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams will host day one of the Ocean State Invitational on Friday, April 15 at the Ray Treacy Track on the campus of Providence College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:50 p.m. with the unseeded section of the men’s 800 meters.
Day one of the meet will feature races from the 800 meters to the 5,000 meters. First up to highlight the evening will be the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase at 6:55 p.m. Danielle Winslow of Boston College, who currently ranks No. 4 in the East Region and No. 9 in the NCAA, and Laura Rose Donegan and Elinor Purrier from the University of New Hampshire, who are both All-Americans, will race in this event. Providence sophomore and 2015 BIG EAST 3,000 meter steeple chase runner up Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) also will make her season debut.
Following the women’s steeple, the men will take to the track for the steeplechase with All-American UNH graduate John Prizzi going up against Providence graduate-student Jordan Mann (St. Louis, Mo.).
The men’s 800 meters looks to have a solid field with Brown’s Ned Willig and Columbia graduate Brendan Fish each having personal best times under 1:49.0. Providence senior Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) will also feature in the race.
At 8:20 p.m., the men’s mile will take place. Providence senior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and New England Distance’s Steven Mangan, who have both run under four minutes in the mile, will battle it out. Nick Ross, who ran 4:00.00 indoors and also runs for New England Distance, a post-collegiate distance group, will also compete on Friday.
The women’s mile will feature Heather MacLean of UMass Amherst, who earned All-America honors in the mile during the indoor season. The women’s mile is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start.
To cap-off the night, the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter runners will step onto the track. The women will be up first at 8:35 p.m. The Providence duo of seniors Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) will be up against PC alum Katie DiCamillo ’09 and Kaitlyn Goodman, who has run the Olympic 10,000 meter qualifying standard and will compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the distance in July.
The men’s 5,000 meters will follow the women at 8:55 p.m. with the Providence men in full force. Graduate students Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.), juniors Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, Country Mayo, Ireland) and sophomore Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) all will be looking to run fast times to qualify for the NCAA First Round later in the season.
If you can’t make it to the track, follow @FriarsXCTrack for live updates during the evening. The Friars will then migrate across town on Saturday for day two of the Ocean State Invitational, hosted by Brown.
