PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll and Cross Country/Track Coach Ray Treacy celebrated the grand opening of Ray Treacy Track on Friday, April 11. The facility, which was completed in the fall, continues a decade long campaign to improve the athletic and recreation facilities at Providence College. The campaign commenced in 2005 when the College opened Lennon Family Field (a field hockey and lacrosse complex). The next phase was the building of the Concannon Fitness Center, which was completed in 2007. In 2012, the College renovated Alumni Hall Gymnasium, the home of the Friar women's basketball and volleyball teams. In addition to the track being completed in the fall, the College also celebrated the grand re-opening of the renovated Schneider Arena, the home of the Friar men's and women's hockey teams.
In addition to a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday night, the men's and women's track teams are scheduled to host the first meet at the new track on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. Bryant and Stony Brook also will compete in the meet.
The Ray Treacy Track is located on Hendricken Field and serves as the home of the Providence College men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. The new complex has a six-lane lane track with eight-lane straightaways, which encompasses a turf field The turf field can be used for soccer, rugby and other intramural sports. The complex has seating for more than 300 fans, as well as a press box and a scoreboard.
The track, which is named in the honor Providence College's legendary coach Ray Treacy. Treacy is in his 30th season as Director of Cross Country and Track Operations at Providence College. In his 30 years at Providence, Treacy has coached 59 All-Americans, who have received 164 All-America accolades, 13 NCAA individual champions in cross country and track, 43 BIG EAST individual champions, who have captured 112 BIG EAST titles, and 11 Olympians. In addition, his teams have captured two NCAA Cross Country Championship (1995 and 2013), 13 NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships, 21 BIG EAST Cross Country titles and 20 New England Championships.
"The new track and field complex is an important addition to our program," Providence College Director of Track and Cross Country Operations Ray Treacy said. "Not only will it benefit the track and field team, but the entire Providence College community has use of this great facility. This track will allow us to continue competing at the highest level of NCAA competition."
The College's athletic facilities improvements will continue with the construction of Chapey Field (a lacrosse/soccer stadium) this spring, as well as a new softball complex and new tennis courts.
