PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Eight members of the Providence College men's track and field team were named to the All-BIG EAST Men's Indoor Track Team yesterday (Feb. 28). The eight earned the honor after their top-three performances at the BIG EAST Championships (Feb. 21-22).
Graduate students Kevin Cooper (Waterford, Ireland) and Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.), along with senior Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) and sophomore Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) were the four Friars that comprised the men's distance medley team that took third with a time of 9:27.82 on Feb. 21.
In the 4 x 800 meter relay, freshman James Campbel (Cumberland, Maine) along with Vercollone and classmates Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) led Providence to a third-place finish in a time of 7:40.28.
Oakley also captured second-place in the one mile run for the second consecutive year. Oakley finished the race in a time of 4:09.94. Saad, like Oakley, had a standout individual performance during the championships, capturing third in the men's 3000 meter run with a time of 8:13.59.
Rounding out the eight Friars with top-three performances was junior Phillip Reid (Oceanport, N.J.), who captured third in the 60 meter hurdle sprint with a time of 8.64.
Oakley (2013), Dixon (2013), Vercollone (2013) and Andrews (2012) all earned their second All-BIG EAST honors, while Saad, Cooper, Reid and Campbel earned their first.
The Friars currently are competing at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass.
