Men's And Women's Indoor Track Competes At Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday, December 10. Six Friar runners qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship on the afternoon. On the women's side, junior Meghan Owen (Danielson, Conn.), graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) and freshman Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) each qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the 3,000 meter run. Owen finished second overall with a time of 9:26.62. Hoban placed third in a time 9:36.24, while DiCamillo took fourth place in a time of 9:42.10. In addition, all three runners qualified for the ECAC Indoor Track Championship with their performances. In other top finishes for the women's team, freshman Katie Elliott (Penfield, N.Y.) won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.96. Freshman Kate Campbell (Auckland, New Zealand) finished just behind her in second with a time of 2:20.29. Sophomore Mary Nelle Trefz (Iowa City, Iowa) finished second in the mile (2:19.96). On the men's side, senior Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand), sophomore James Lourenco (West Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) each qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in their respective events. Jones won the mile in a time of 4:16.02. Smith qualified with a first place finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:16.23. Lourenco qualified in the 500 meter dash with a second-place finish in 1:04.79. In addition, Smith and Lourenco also qualified for the IC4A Indoor Track Championship in their events.
Both teams return to action on Friday, January 20 at the URI Quad Meet in Kingston, R.I.
