The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed in its first meet of the season on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Brown Alden Invitational in Providence, R.I. At Brown, the Friars turned in several strong performances. The men's team finished first in four events, and the women's team took first in two.
On the men's side, the Friars were top performers in the 400-meter, 1000-meter, 1 Mile and 3000-meter races. Junior Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) crossed first in the 400-meters with a time of 51.42 and freshman Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) led the 1000-meters with a time of 2:37.81. Freshman Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) crossed first in the 1 Mile Run with a time of 4:21.61, 20-seconds ahead of sophomore Luke Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) who was second (4:41.46). Providence posted six of the top-eight performances in the 3000-meters, including the top-three racers. Senior Dominic Channon led the Friars with a time of 8:22.51, and was followed closely by junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) who finished with a time of 8:22.93.
On the women's side, Providence finished first in the 1 Mile and 3000-meter races. In the 1 Mile Run, the Friars had four of the top-five finishers. Sophomore Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the charge with a time of 5:11.49. Freshmen Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 3000-meter race. Mullins finished with a time of 10:14.92 and Powell finished with a time of 10:33.92.
Providence women were also successful in the 400-meters with four of the top-five finishers. Sophomore Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass.) finished second (1:01.41), followed by classmate Caroline Callaghan (Rochester, N.H.) who placed third (1:02.13). Sophomore Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and junior Maria Pantazelos (Danvers, Mass.) rounded out the top five with times of 1:02.25 and 1:03.19, respectively. Also of note, sophomore Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.) finished second in the 1000m with a time of 3:05.18.
Providence will compete next at the Fordham Quad Meet on Friday, Dec. 7 in Bronx, N.Y.
