JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA -
Providence College senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) has advanced to the next round of the 1500-meters at the East Preliminaries of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Matthews now moves on to Sunday's quarterfinals at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium with an eye on qualifying for the national semifinals and finals in two weeks.
Thursday's 1500-meter event featured four heats. The top five finishers in each heat, plus the owners of the next four fastest times, forged ahead. Matthews placed fourth in heat three with a time of 3:47.95.
Matthews is the first of six Friars competing at the regional meet. On Friday, junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) will challenge the quarterfinal of the women's 3000-meter steeplechase.
In addition to Matthews' quarterfinal, the focus of Sunday's schedule will be the 5000-meter semifinals. Seniors Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) and Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) will represent the men's team at the distance, while sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and senior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) will run for the PC women.
