Men's Track Places 11th And Women Finish 13th At BIG EAST Championship

BIG EAST Outdoor Championship at Rutgers Univ., Piscataway, N.J. - May 5-6, 2001

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Providence College men's and women's track teams concluded the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship in Piscataway, N.J. on Saturday, May 5. The men's team placed 11th of 14 teams with 33 points and women's squad placed 13th of 14 teams with 31 points.

On the final day of competition, senior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) won the 5,000 meter title in a time of 13:58.40 with the fifth fastest time ever at the BIG EAST Championship and the fastest time since 1993. With his time, Kelly qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship and earned his seventh BIG EAST title, which ties him with former Friar Mark Carroll for the most ever at Providence.

Junior Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) and sophomore Adam Sutton (Preston, England) each had a strong race for the Friars in the 5,000. Galvin finished second behind Kelly in a time of 14:19.82 and Sutton placed fifth in a time of 14:22.06.

In the men's 1,500 meters, junior Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) finished fourth in a time of 3:50.45.

On the women's side, junior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) was the top finisher of the day for PC, placing third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:49.38. She was followed by junior Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.), who finished sixth (17:00.93) in the 5,000.

The women's 4 x 800 meter team of sophomore Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), senior Joan Bohlke (Old Saybrook, Conn.), sophomore Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) and junior Kate Gall (Cumberland, Md.) finished eighth in a time of 9:08.15.
