TAMPA, FLORIDA - Providence College junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) has won the BIG EAST title in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the conference championships at the University of South Florida Track Stadium.
The junior standout crossed the line in a new stadium record of 10:08.76, less than two seconds ahead of her teammate. Providence senior Hannah Davidson, who placed second in 10:09.70.
IT is the first BIG EAST track victory for the Friar women since Greany took the same event as a freshman in 2010. That day, running in Cincinnati, she also broke the stadium record.
Friday marked the 18th time a Friar women has won an individual title at the conference meet.
For Davidson, the effort is the latest in what has been a strong 2012. Last week, the senior won the steeplechase at the prestigious Penn Relays and was named BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week.
The Providence men featured senior David McCarthy (Westford, Ireland) in the 10,000-meters on Friday. A two-time winner at the 2012 indoor conference meet, McCarthy placed eighth in the event Friday with a time of 33.14.97. It was a valiant effort for the senior, who fought his way to the front of the field with three laps to go. The move came after McCarthy battled congestion with deft footwork to get to the outside. Eventually, he drifted back and the race was won by Georgetown's Mark Dennin in 33:06.47.
Also running for the PC women Friday was Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.). The junior placed tenth in the 10,000 meters, crossing in 36:21.95, a time that bests the ECAC qualifying standard.
Providence will run several contenders in Day 2 of the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday.
