Men's And Women's Track Each Finishes 12th At BIG EAST Championship

BIG EAST Outdoor Championship at the Univ. of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn. - May 3-4, 2003

STORRS, Conn. -- The Providence College men's and women's track teams each concluded the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship in Storrs, Conn. on Sunday, May 4. The Friar women's team scored 34 points and finished 12th. The men's squad scored 31 points and placed 12th.

Friar senior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) was named the BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning her third consecutive BIG EAST 3,000 meter steeplechase title on Saturday, May 3. Her time of 9:58.26 is fastest time ever run by an Irish woman in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the fastest time run by a collegiate runner this season. It also is the fifth fastest collegiate steeplechase time ever.

The women also were led by senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.). Freeburg also was impressive as she won the javelin throw with a toss of 45.77 meters on Saturday. For Freeburg, it was her second BIG EAST javelin title and the first since 2001.

On Sunday, May 4 in the finals of the 1,500 meters, senior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) placed ninth (4:33.05) and freshman Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) finished 10th (4:36.70). In the 10,000 meters, junior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) placed sixth in a time of 36:36.75 on Saturday. The top performance for the Friar women on Sunday was run by sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland), who placed second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:58.51. Also on Sunday, the Friar 4 x 800 meter relay team of McGettigan, O'Shea, Crombie and Cappello placed sixth in a time of 9:01.29.

 

 

On the men's side, the Friars were led by graduate student Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) and sophomore Liam Reale (Hospital Ireland). Reilly finished second in the 10,000 meters (30:24.02) on Saturday and Reale placed second in the 1,500 (3:50.39) on Sunday. Sophomore Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) also was fourth (30:48.91) in the 10,000 meters on Saturday.

In the men's 5,000 meter race on Sunday, senior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) finished third in a time of 14:19.77 and qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships. Junior Jamie Carmichael of Windsor, Vt. (eighth, 14:41.17), senior Tim Curran of Northboro, Mass. (ninth, 14:43.34) and sophomore Pat Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (11th, 14:45.08) also ran the 5,000.

PC's 4 x 800 meter relay team of Reale, freshman Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand), freshman Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) and sophomore Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) finished seventh in a time of 7:37.50 on Sunday.

Rounding out the men's action, Carmichael finished eighth (9:18.64) and Guidera placed 11th (9:23.55) in the steeplechase on Saturday.
