Men's And Women's Track Complete Day 1 At BIG EAST Track

BIG EAST Outdoor Championship at the Univ. of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn. - May 3-4, 2003 PC's Roisin McGettigan Wins the Steeplechase and Brooke Freeburg Captures the Javelin STORRS, Conn. -- The Providence College men's and women's track teams each had a strong first day at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship in Storrs, Conn. on Saturday, May 3. After the first day of competition for the Friars, the women's team had scored 23 points and was in eighth place and the men's squad had scored 14 points and was in ninth place. The women were led by seniors Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) and Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.). McGettigan won her third consecutive BIG EAST 3,000 meter steeplechase title. Her time of 9:58.26 is fastest time ever run by an Irish woman in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the fastest time run by a collegiate runner this season. It also is the fifth fastest collegiate steeplechase time ever. Freeburg also was impressive as she won the javelin throw with a toss of 45.77 meters. For Freeburg, it was her second BIG EAST javelin title and the first since 2001. In the preliminaries of the 1,500 meters, senior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) placed 11th (4:30.54) overall and freshman Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) finished 12th (4:32.35) overall and qualified for the finals on Sunday, May 4. In the 10,000 meters, junior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) placed sixth in a time of 36:36.75.
On the men's side, graduate student Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) finished second in the 10,000 (30:24.02) and sophomore Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) was fourth (30:48.91).
Sophomore Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) finished sixth (3:52.87) overall in the preliminaries of the 1,500 meters and qualified for the finals on Sunday, May 4. Freshman Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) finished 13th (3:54.41) overall in the preliminaries of the 1,500 meters. In the 800 meters preliminaries, freshman Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand) placed 14th (1:52.75). Rounding out the men's action, junior Jamie Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) finished eighth in the steeplechase in a time of 9:18.64.
