Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Teams Compete At BIG EAST Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field teams competed in the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City. The championships kicked off on Saturday, February 23rd and wrapped up today, Sunday, February 24th.

On Saturday, the Men's team was led by sophomore Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) who ran the 1000m in a time of 2:25.18, qualifying him for the finals to take place on Sunday. Senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) ran the 5000m in a time of 14:32.54, good enough to qualify him for the IC4A Championships. The men's Distance Medley team comprised of senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.), junior Charles Dewey (Worcester, Mass.), junior Nick Berluti (Westwood, Mass.), and senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) finished in fourth place with a time of 9:50.02. This time qualified the team for the IC4A Championships. The men's team finished day one in tenth place with five points.

The women's day one was led by sophomore Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) who ran a NCAA Provisional time of 16:26.46 in the 5000m preliminary race. Douglas' time was good enough to earn her a second place finish in the race, one that included over 20 runners. Senior Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) also ran an impressive 5000m, placing fifth in the race with a time of 16:46.99, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships. The women's Distance Medley team including sophomore Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland), junior Katie Elliot (Penfield, N.Y.), junior Katherine Schock (Norwood, Mass.), and junior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Sask.) finished sixth with a time of 11:48.46, qualifying them for the ECAC Championships. The Women's team finished Day 1 in eighth place with a total of 15 points.

 

 

Day two was led by Doetzel who placed second in the 3000m with a NCAA Provisional time of 9:25.68. Twohig finished the 3000m in eighth place with a time of 9:41.75, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships. The 4x800m relay team of Elliot, Schock, freshman Katherine Leugers (Richmond, Vt.), and Douglas placed seventh with a time of 9:07.19, qualifying them for the ECAC Championships. Freshman Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) finished the mile run in ninth place with an ECAC Championship qualifying time of 5:00.95. The Providence College Women's Indoor Track and Field team finished the BIG EAST Championships in 13th place with 26 points.

On day two, the men's 4x800m relay team of McDermott, Berluti, senior James Lourenco (West Warwick, R.I.), and Dewey finished fourth in a time of 7:28.60. McLaren finished ninth in the 1000m finals, running in a time of 2:28.44. In the 3000m, sophomore Tom Webb (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomore Michael Anderson (Ajax, Ont.) finished 12th and 14th with times of 8:20.88 and 8:26.34, respectively. Both times were good enough to qualify Webb and Anderson for the IC4A Championships. Freshman Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) placed 11th in the mile run with a time of 4:16.61. The Men's Indoor Track and Field team finished the BIG EAST Championships in tenth place with ten points.

The Men's and Women's Providence College Track and Field team returns to action when they compete in the New England Championships in Boston, Massachusetts on the campus of Boston University on Friday, February 29th and Saturday, March 1st.
