BIG EAST Indoor Championship at Syracuse Univ., Syracuse, N.Y. - Feb. 19-20, 2000

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Providence College men's track team scored 47 points and finished seventh of 13 teams at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. on Sunday, February 20. For the Friars, their seventh place finish was the team's top finish at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship since the 1993 squad placed seventh.

The Friars were led by senior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland), who captured the 3,000 (8:17.87) and 5,000 (14:17.93) meter titles and earned All-BIG EAST accolades. With his time of 14:17.93 in the 5,000, Kelly qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship. The wins also gave Kelly his first BIG EAST Indoor titles and his second and third BIG EAST titles overall (1999 Outdoor 10,000 meter title). With his wins in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, Kelly becomes the first Friar to win two BIG EAST titles at the same meet since Mark Burdis captured the BIG EAST 3,000 and 5,000 crowns at the 1993 Indoor Championship.

Also in the 5,000 meters, sophomore Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) placed third (14:24.05) and earned All-BIG EAST honors.

Sophomore Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) finished strong in the mile, placing second in a time of 4:11.50 and earning All-BIG EAST honors.
