AKRON, OHIO - The Providence College men's track team competed in day one of the BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track Championship on February 18. The championship is being held at the Akron Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio.

Senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) captured the BIG EAST title in the 5,000 meters with a first place finish in a time of 14:09.44. His time is a provisional NCAA Qualifying Time and also set a facility record at the Akron Athletics Field House. The previous record was held by Fred Keiser of run-insight.com at 14:36.52. Fagan joined fellow Providence runner Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) to sweep the men's and women's 5,000 meter events. Cullen won the women's BIG EAST title with a time of 15:58.78, also setting a facility record.

Senior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) also competed in the 5,000 meters and finished 13th (14:41.57). With his time, he qualified for the IC4A Indoor Track Championship.

The Friars' distance medley team of freshman Nick Berluti, freshman Charles Dewey, sophomore Mike Blanchard and sophomore Doug Coffed placed ninth (10:19.54).

Sophomore Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) and senior Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand) competed in the preliminaries of their respective events. Smith won the prelims in the mile with a time of 3:59.33. Jones finished fifth in the 1,000 meter prelims with a time of 2:26.60.
 

 

The Friars return to action on Sunday, February 19 in the final day of competition at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship.
