Indoor Track Wins Three BIG EAST Championship Titles

GENEVA, OHIO - The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed at the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 16-17. The teams took home three BIG EAST Championship titles.

Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) finished first in the 1,000-meters with a time of 2:29.57. Matthews competed in the same event at the 2012 Championship and finished third with a time of 2:30.11.

Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) finished first in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:17.45. Quinn finished fourth in the 5,000-meters at last year's championship with a time of 8:05.22.

Senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) and sophomore Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I) competed in the 3,000-meters. Channon finished fifth with a time of 8:11.35, while Hillery finished 12th with a time of 8:15.41.

Also of note, freshman Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) finished second in the mile with a time of 4:09.50. Senior Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) finished eighth in the same event with a time of 4:11.54. The distance medley relay team consisting of freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England), senior Nikolas Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.), freshman Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) and Channon finished third with a time of 9:49.26.

The Friar men's 4 x 800 team of Rebovich, Matthews, Wallace and Vercollone placed sixth in the finals in a time of 7:34.97.

Junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) represented the Friars in the 3,000-meters. Sisson finished first with a time of 9:20.68, and Nagel finished fourth with a time of 9:25.01.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Shelby Greany finished sixth (16:35.84), junior Samantha Roecker was ninth (16:54.90) and junior Erin Murphy placed 15th (17:30.31).

The Friar women's 4 x 800 team of Jackie McCarthy, Katelyn Sischo, Elizabeth DeVivo and Caile Kohlbrenner finished 12th (9:12.08) in the finals. In the distance medley relay, Nagel, Caitlin Abelseth, McCarthy and Sisson placed sixth in a time of 11:21.02.

Providence will compete at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. on Feb. 22-23.
