Men's And Women's Swimming And Diving Sweep UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Providence College women's swimming and diving team defeated UMass Dartmouth, 176-122, and the men's team earned a 167.5-79.5 victory on Saturday, January 24 in North Dartmouth, Mass. On the women's side, senior Bridget McKenna (Narragansett, R.I.) and junior Jamie Modon-Cohen (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led Providence with two individual victories each. McKenna won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:22.60) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.75). Modon-Cohen earned victories in the one-meter diving event with 222 points and swept the diving competition with another victory in the three-meter dive with 241.55 points. In all, PC had six team members win a total of eight events on the day. On the men's side, seven different Friar swimmers took first-place finishes in 11 events. Senior Patrick Kavanagh (Newburgh, N.Y.), sophomore Seth Brockman (Kenner, La.), senior Bryan Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) and sophomore Frank LaMonaca (Cheshire, Conn.) each earned two first-place individual victories to lead the Friars. Kavanagh won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:35.60) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.29). Brockman took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.74) and finished tied for first in the 50-yard freestyle (28.29). Flynn won the 50-yard and 100-yard backstroke events with times of 26.40 and 56.88, respectively. LaMonaca dominated the butterfly events with a win in the 50-yard butterfly (26.04) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.39).
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, January 31 against Vermont in Providence, R.I. The diving events begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the swim events at 1:00 p.m.
