The Providence College men's and women's swimming teams traveled to the University of Maine on Sunday, January 14. Both teams were defeated as the men's team lost 176-114, and the women's team lost 186-92.
There were several top finishes in men's competition. Freshman Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.) placed first in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.19. Freshman Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.) took first in the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 57.62 and the 200 yard backstroke in 2:05.27. Sophomore Nick Trilla (Belmont, Mass.) placed first in the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:48.23. Reilly and Trilla finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 yard butterfly in times of 2:09.74 and 2:16.90. Sophomore Justin Rich (Branford, Conn.) finished first in the 100 yard butterfly in 57.97.
There were several top finishes on the women's side as well. Senior Annie Nemeth (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had first place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.75) and the 200 yard IM (2:15.00). The Providence `A' 400 yard freestyle relay team comprised of senior Emily Corcoran (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Christine Bonagura (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), junior Jessica McCarthy (West Hurley, N.Y.) and freshman Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.) placed first in a time of 3:55.71. Senior Katelyn Flynn (Sinking Spring, Pa.) placed second in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:02.41.
With the loss, the men's team falls to 4-4, and the women's team falls to 4-3. The Friars return to action on Saturday, January 20 when they travel to UMass-Dartmouth to compete in a dual meet.
