Dec. 9, 2016

PrOVIDENCE, R.I. -

Providence College men’s soccer senior captain Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) was named a First Team All-American in an announcement made by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Gressel is one of 36 players to be honored as an NSCAA All-American and one of twelve players to be named to the First Team. He is the fifth Friar to earn All-America honors all-time,  and the first since Phil Towler in 2014 (Third Team). Additionally, he is the first First-Team All-America selection for the program since Ryan Maduro in 2006, and the third Friar to be selected to the First Team all-time. Gressel is the second All-American in the program’s history to have been coached by Craig Stewart. Overall, the Friars’ five honorees have earned All-America recognition a total of seven times.

Gressel was named a 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist (Nov. 29) and earned NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region First Team recognition, after being named to the Third Team in 2015.  He was named the BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year, a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and to the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team. Gressel also was selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

Gressel led the Friars to their second NCAA Elite Eight appearance in the last three seasons, finishing with a team and a career high 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. Gressel also tallied five-game winning goals, including the lone goal in the Friars’ 1-0 defeat of St. John’s to capture the program’s first BIG EAST regular season title.

The senior added nine points in NCAA Tournament play, with four goals and one assist. Gressel finished his career ranked second all-time at Providence in career goals (30), career assists (26), and career points (86).

Providence finished the year with a 15-7 overall record and first place in the BIG EAST. Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time and made it to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
