Men's Soccer Places Five Players On The NSCAA Men's All-Great Lakes Region Teams

PrOVIDENCE, R.I. - In an announcement made by the NSCAA on Dec. 6 [today] three Friars were named to the 2016 NSCAA Division I Men's All-Great Lakes Region Teams. Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, German) and Mark Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) were named to the First Team, Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) was named to the Second Team, and Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) were named to the Third Team. 

Gressel finished the season with a team high 36 points from 15 goals and six assists, leading the Friars to their second Elite Eight appearance in three seasons. Gressel also tallied five game-winning goals, including the lone goal in the Friars' 1-0 defeat of St. John's to capture the BIG EAST regular season title.

Jecewiz led the Friars' back line starting each of Providence's 22 games in 2016. He helped the team to eight clean sheets, including one in NCAA tournament play and only allowing more than two goals against one time.

Miller finished the season with a 14-2 record and a .848 save percentage. Miller also earned eight shutouts and a 0.74 goals against average in 1462:41 minutes of play. He recorded one shutout in NCAA tournament play, when the Friars defeated Delaware in the First Round.

Griffin recorded seven goals and one assist for 15 points in his rookie season. The freshman midfielder collected six game winning goals, incluing the game-winner in the Friars' 2-1 victory at Creighton for the NCAA Third Round game. 

Serrano was a steady and constant part of the Friars' defense throughout the 2016 season, playing in all 22 of Providence's games. Serrano's lone goal on the season came as the game-winning goal directly off of a corner kick in the Friars' NCAA Second Round 5-4 victory at No. 1 Maryland.
