PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's Soccer team is set to face Penn in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Thursday, Nov. 21. The Friars will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for a 7:00 p.m. night cap versus the Quakers at Rhodes Field.
Stewart Guides Friars To NCAA Tournament
In just his second season as the Providence College head coach, Craig Stewart has earned a berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament. Stewart led the Friars to an overall record of 12-5-3 headed into the tournament, including a 6-3-0 record in BIG EAST Conference play.
Providence In First Round Appearences
Providence has advanced to the NCAA tournament six times (1983, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011). The Friars hosted the first round in 2010 and 2011 with games against Saint Peter's (W, 6-2) and Dartmouth (W, 1-0), respectively. In its other four appearances the Friars faced their first round opponents on the road. Providence traveled to Connecticut (L, 2-0,1983), Hofstra (W,1-0, 2005- L,2-0, 2006) and Old Dominion (L, 1-0, 2007).
In four first round games on the road, the Friars have posted a record of 2-2.
NCAA Championship History
Providence has made six NCAA Tournament appearances. In six appearances, the Friars have posted a 3-3 record in the first round. The Friars' first trip to the NCAA Tournament came in 1983 when they travelled to Storrs, Conn. for a match-up with Connecticut. The Huskies defeated the Friars, 2-0.
The Friars advanced to the second round of the tournament in 2005, 2010 and 2011. In 2005, the Friars defeated Hofstra 1-0 in overtime to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Friars fell to then fourth-ranked North Carolina, 2-1. In 2010, the Friars hosted Saint Peter's in the first round where they topped the Peacocks, 6-2. The Friars fell to then 16th-ranked Ohio State in the second round, 2-1. The Friars most recent trip to the tournament came in 2011 when the Friars defeated Dartmouth in the first round, 1-0. They advanced to play UC Santa Barbara in the second round where they fell to the Gauchos, 3-2.
First Meeting With The Quakers in NCAA First Round
Thursday's match up serves as the first meeting between Providence and Penn in the history of the two programs.
Scouting Penn Penn
enters Thursday night's cap with an overall record of 8-8-1, including a 5-1-1 record in Ivy League play. The Quakers claimed the Ivy League Championship on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a 2-0 win over Harvard at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Cambridge, Mass.
Duke Lacroix tops Penn's score sheet with 19 points on a team-high eight goals and three assists. Two additional Quakers, Alec Neumann and Sam Hayward, join Lacroix in double digits in the scoring column with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Neumann and Alex Reddy have each tallied four assists on the season.
Tyler Kinn has played 1596:30 minutes in goal for the Quakers and has tallied 67 saves. Kinn has posted a .753 save percentage and holds a 1.54 goals against average. In addition Max Plkinhorne has recorded 311:53 minutes in goal and has collected 23 saves and a .920 save percentage.
The winner of the Providence vs. Penn game will face Maryland in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 5:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The Terps earned a first round bye after winning the ACC Conference Title.
Road To PPL Park
The 2013 NCAA Semifinal and Final rounds will be hosted at PPL Park in Philadelphia, Pa (Dec. 13-Dec. 15). The semifinal matches will be played on Dec. 13 at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPNU. The NCAA Championship game will be played on Dec. 15 and will be broadcast via ESPNU.
BIG EAST Presence In NCAA Tournament
Five BIG EAST teams have earned berths into the 2013 NCAA Championship. In addition to Providence, Marquette, Creighton, St. John's and Georgetown will be competing for the National Championship.
The first round of tournament play is Thursday, Nov. 21. Providence will travel to Penn, St. John's will travel to Deleware and Creighton will host seattle.
The second round of the tournament will be played on Sunday, Nov. 24. After earning the BIG EAST Title, Marquette earned a first round bye and will host the winner of Akron and Indiana, the 2012 NCAA Champions. in the second round. Georgetown also earned a first round bye and will host the winner of Old Dominion and Drexel.
