Men's Soccer Claims At-Large Berth Into NCAA Tournament Field

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team earned an at-large bid to participate in the 49th-annual NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. The Friars will face Old Dominion on Saturday, November 24 in the first round of the tournament in Norfolk, Va. Game time has been set for 7:00 p.m. The Friars are making their third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, and fourth in program history. Should the Friars advance through the first round with a victory, the team will take on Brown University at Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I. That game would be played at 7:00 p.m. on November 28. The Friars enter the NCAA Tournament with a 9-7-2 overall record and are led by senior All-America and All-BIG EAST First-Team performer Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.). Maduro owns five goals and six assists on the season for 16 points. Old Dominion enters the NCAA's with a 12-6-3 overall record. The Monarchs earned an automatic berth into the NCAA field after capturing the CAA Tournament title over Towson in penalty kicks. After a scoreless 90 minutes of play between ODU and Towson, the game remained knotted at 0-0 at the conclusion of two overtime periods. The Monarchs clinched the victory with a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks. Providence is 1-3 in NCAA Tournament action under the direction of eighth-year Head Coach Chaka Daley. In 2005, the Friars defeated Hofstra, 1-0, in overtime before falling to North Carolina, 2-0, in the second round. In 2006, the Friars were defeated in the first round by Hofstra, 2-0. Providence's only other appearance in the NCAA Tournament dates back to the 1983 campaign, when the Friars fell to Connecticut, 2-0, in the opening round. PC stands at 1-4 all-time at the NCAA's.
