What a week it was for the Friars! This week marked the start of Big East playoffs and saw Providence head to Philadelphia to take on the Villanova Wildcats. The Friars had put together a solid road record coming into this game and continued their good form with a very impressive, 3-0 win over the Wildcats. A Villanova shot off the post early in the game provided the only wakeup call the Friars needed. They went on to control the game and put together an all-around quality performance. Greg Davis scored with less than two minutes left in the first half to give the Friars the lead into halftime. The Friars carried that momentum into the second half where Matt Marcin scored two goals. On his second, he somehow found a way to sneak through three Villanova defenders and fire a toe poke underneath the Villanova keeper. The defense held strong and the game ended 3-0.

That win gave the Friars the chance to play at Georgetown this past Saturday. The first half was a tough one for Providence. Georgetown came out strong and created some early chances. Still, the Friars got to halftime tied 0-0. The second half was a different story. Providence came out with a new energy and began a very positive stretch of play that was capped off with a goal from Giuseppe Guerriero in the 55th minute. Marc Cintron threaded a perfectly weighted through ball that found Guerriero before he placed it past the Georgetown keeper. For the next twenty minutes the game was back and forth between two teams fighting for their tournament lives. Georgetown received a free kick around thirty yards away from the goal. They hit a strike that got deflected off the ground right onto the head of a Georgetown forward who put it into the side netting to tie the game at one. Just minutes later, a Georgetown forward broke in behind the Friar defense. He hit a volley from five yards out that Jjohan Obando was somehow able to flick over the topside of the goal. The Friars remained focused and fought their way into the lead with a little over six minutes remaining. Matt Marcin played a through ball to Cintron who was able to skillfully chip the ball over the Georgetown goalie to take the 2-1 lead and secure the Friars place in the Big East semifinals!

With that win, Providence booked their spot at Red Bull Arena this Saturday and virtually solidified a spot for themselves in the NCAA tournament. The Friars will play the winner of the UCONN and Cincinnati match in the Big East semifinals. If they are able to stay on form I have no doubt that Providence can win their semifinal match and be in place to take home the team's first ever Big East Championship!
