Three PC Men's Soccer Players Earn All-BIG EAST Accolades
Nov. 2, 2006 PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- It was announced today that three Providence College men's soccer players earned All-BIG EAST honors. Junior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, senior co-captain Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) earned Second Team honors and sophomore Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) was named to the Third Team. It marks the first time ever that Providence College has had three players garner All-BIG EAST honors in one season. Maduro is the first PC player to be named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. In addition, Maduro, who was named to the Third Team in 2005, joins Kempes Corbally `02 and Kevin Jones `00 as the only players in PC history to earn multiple BIG EAST accolades. Maduro has been instrumental in leading the Friars to their best record (13-5) since 1984 and reach BIG EAST Championship Semifinals. In 18 matches, Maduro has recorded three goals and four assists for 10 points, which ranks fourth on the team. Most recently, he scored in a 2-0 victory over Louisville in the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship on October 25. Konopka becomes the second Friar goalkeeper and the first since Dan Pires in 1996 to be named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. In 16 matches this season, Konopka has posted a 0.87 goals against average, a .806 save percentage and six shutouts. Most recently, Konopka made five saves to lead the Friars to a 2-0 victory over Louisville in the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship on October 25. He ranks in the top five in the BIG EAST in saves (58) and goals against average (0.87). In BIG EAST games only, Konopka finished fourth in minutes played (1000) and fifth in goals against average (0.90) to help the Friars win a school record seven conference matches.
Ritter also has enjoyed an impressive season for the Friars. He has started all 18 matches and has scored four goals and recorded four assists for 12 points, which is tied for second on the team. In addition, Ritter ranks tied for first on the squad with three match-winning goals and has helped lead PC to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1986-87. He scored the match winner against Louisville in the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship on October 25. He also scored match winners against then No. 14 Brown (Oct. 10) and Georgetown (Sep. 30). The Friars will battle the St. John's Red Storm on Friday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. The match will be aired live on CSTV.
