PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference announced today that Providence College men's soccer freshman Nick Cianci (West Hartford, Conn.) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. It marks the second consecutive week that a Friar player has earned the league's rookie of the week honors as Alex Redding (Newton, Mass.) earned the honor on October 22. Cianci helped the Friars post a 1-0-1 record as the team played in two overtime matches last week. He assisted on the game-winning overtime goal as the Friars defeated Seton Hall, 3-2, on October 24. On October 28 against No. 7/11 Notre Dame, Cianci scored his first collegiate goal with 45 seconds remaining left in the first half to tie the game, 1-1. The match finished in a 2-2 double overtime tie. Cianci is tied for sixth on the team with five points (one goal, three assists).
Providence (9-5-2, 5-3-2 BIG EAST), which is currently in fourth place of the BIG EAST Blue Division, has already clinched a BIG EAST Championship berth. The Friars can clinch a home BIG EAST Championship First Round game if Georgetown ties or loses one of its two remaining games or if the Friars win their final regular season game on Saturday, November 3 at West Virginia.
