The Providence College men's soccer team will look to extend its unbeaten streak to four matches when it travels to face BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. in South Orange, N.J.
Providence (7-5-2, 2-4-1 BIG EAST) currently holds the sixth and final playoff spot in the BIG EAST Blue Division with seven points, four more points than eighth-place Seton Hall. The Friars are 2-0-1 in their last three games, including a 2-1 home victory against Pittsburgh on Sunday, October 24. Senior Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) scored early to give the Friars a 1-0 halftime edge. The Panthers rallied to tie the game at 1-1 with just over eight minutes remaining in the second half, but senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) scored the decisive goal with 5:02 left as the Friars climbed ahead of Pittsburgh in the BIG EAST Blue Division.
Marcin leads the team in scoring with four goals, three of which have been match winners. He also is tops on the squad with nine points. Sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) ranks second with eight points (three goals and two assists), while classmate Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) has six points (one goal and four assists). In goal, red-shirt junior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, October 25, has played in all 14 matches and has four shutouts.
Seton Hall (3-11-1, 1-6 BIG EAST) is coming off a 3-2 overtime road loss at West Virginia on October 23. George Velasquez scored in the 84th minute to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead, but the Mountaineers evened the game in the 89th minute to force overtime and scored the match winner in the 94th minute. The Pirates' last win came against Pittsburgh, a 4-0 result on October 2, as Brayan Martinez scored two goals. Martinez and Steven Rose lead the team in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12 points each. In goal, Kevin Bonder has played in nine of the 14 games and has two shutouts.
The Friars are 8-11-6 all-time against the Pirates. Last season, the two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in Providence. The last time that Providence and Seton Hall met in South Orange was in 2008 as Martinez scored early in overtime to lead his team to a 3-2 victory. The Friars' last win over SHU came in 2007 when they posted a 3-2 overtime triumph in Providence.
